The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) would explore the possibilities of collaboration in African and Gulf countries in the areas of teaching-learning, research and training, with a focus on open and distance education.

IGNOU vice chancellor Prof M Aslam said this today after a day-long conference of ambassadors and high commissioners of African and Gulf countries.

He said the conference had encouraged IGNOU to take up educational collaborations, and invited representatives of the African countries to have bilateral meetings to take the matter forward.

Amit Khare, Joint secretary in the HRD Ministry, said the programmes being offered under the PAN-African Project should be continued till the Centre takes a decision on setting up of the India Africa Virtual University.

The virtual university, which was planned a couple of years ago, seeks to create an educational link to take Indo-African relations forward.

The conference was conducted by the pan-African e-networking project which is supported by the External Affairs Ministry and Staff Training and Research Institute in Distance Education of IGNOU and the varsity's International Division.
