Calling for alertness in the police forces to take on challenges posed by militants, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu region today said tackling militancy remained top priority for the police force.

"We need to be alert and prepared to take on any challenge on the militancy front", IGP Rajesh Kumar said during his first interaction with the media here after taking over charge on Tuesday.

"Militancy remains our top priority. There have been a number of incidents in Kashmir recently," the IG said adding that security of women and crimes related to them are also on the priority list.

"Our focus will also be on preventive policing, so that any untoward incident is prevented before it happens," he said.

"There are other core policing areas like the menace of drugs. We will focus on eradicating the drug menace," Kumar said, seeking support of the civil society in maintaining law and order.

"Maintenance of law and order is one of the primary jobs of the police. We will work together - the civil society, various groups within the society, media, social activists, political class - so that law and order remains normal," the IGP said.

On the services front, Kumar said, "We will ensure that services, like passport verification, delivery of summons etc are done in a time bound manner."

Ensuring that shortcomings in the functioning of the police will be corrected, the IGP added that corruption was a bigger issue and not only limited to the police.
