"We are looking to your help to remedy the situation and to help IIT retain its high standards and augment the same to compete with the best of the world's institutions," the association said in a letter to Raju.

The association said former HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had declared that the government would not go ahead with the proposed changes if there was even one dissent.

"He has obviously not kept his promise."

The association claims the IIT alumni spread across the globe is deeply aggrieved and has "given us the mandate to do all that is necessary to remedy the situation".

Aspirants to the IITs and other technical institutes like NITs would be appearing the IIT-JEE next year under a new two-tier format which also gives weightage to the class XII marks.

Despite initial objections, most of the IITs have given their nod to the format.
