IIT Kharagpur working to improve life in rural areas

The Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur has started working in villages with NGOs to transform the rural areas of the country through development of technology.

Under the HRD Ministry's National Initiative for Design Innovation, with a funding of Rs 10 crore, the IIT will identify the technological problems, develop processes and make products through people's participation, a release said today.

It will also train artisans and entrepreneurs on established technologies through training, workshops and demonstrations.

"The Institute's primary goal is to develop design driven innovations pertaining to rural technology with the aim towards developmental and vocational support with opportunities in livelihood and entrepreneurship which can improve living conditions of rural people," it said.
 

Officials said IIT Kharagpur would orient undergraduate students in order to develop innovative solutions and institutional networks for innovations in the thematic areas and also conduct courses for UG/PG students on design innovations and related areas.

Collaborations are also being forged with institutes and organizations in the areas of design and innovations.
