An IIT student here was killed when he was hit by a speeding car near his hostel with his father claiming that lack of medical facilities at the institute resulted in his death and demanding that a statue of his son be installed in the campus.

The incident occurred yesterday when Hemant and his friend Mahendra had crossed over to the other side of road for buying ice cream after having dinner at the mess at about 9 pm, said Amar Deep Sharma, assistant registrar and spokesperson of the institute.

They were hit by a speeding car while crossing the road and rushed to a private hospital in the institute's ambulance stationed at the hostel, Sharma said.

Hemant succumbed to his injuries yesterday night and Mahendra's conditions is stated to be critical, he said.

Institute's director C V R Murti and other faculty members rushed to the hospital on receiving information about the incident.

"We have removed one of Mahendra's kidneys as it was badly damaged and over a dozen units of blood have been administered to him. Next 24 hours are very crucial for him," said a doctor.

Hemant hailed from Hathras in UP whereas Mahendra is from Sikar in Rajasthan.

Police said a case has been registered against the unidentified car driver, who fled from the spot after hitting them.

Hemant's father Anil Kumar claimed that his son could have been saved if there were medical facilities available at the institute's campus.

He demanded that a statue of his son be installed at the institute's campus and the day of his death be observed as a holiday at the institute.
