Sweden's IKEA Group will recall over 7,000 child safety gates from China due to its unreliable locking mechanisms, the country's consumer quality watchdog said today.

The products to be recalled, which were made in Denmark, were produced between 1998 and 2016, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

The unreliability of the gates means they let small children fall down stairs, the watchdog said.

The company did not specify the date of the recall, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The recall call came after reports quoted Swedish firm as saying last month that it has received reports that the gates opened unexpectedly, causing few children to fall down stairs.

In some cases medical attention was needed, reports said.

IKEA, the global home furnishings group, has more than 300 stores in 27 countries.
