Illegal emeralds worth Rs 7 lakh seized, one held

One person was today arrested with a large number of contraband emeralds worth Rs 7 lakh here today, a senior police officer said.

Acting on a tip off, the police were waiting near Dimna roundabout under MGM police station area and intercepted the man after he alighted from a bus, Superintendent of Police (rural), Shailendra Prasad Burnwal said.

The police found that he was carrying a large number of emeralds, weighing 600 gram, in three packets, but he failed to produce any document for those precious gems.

The person, a resident of Telco police station limit here, was then arrested and forwarded to jail, Burnwal added.
 

He said during interrogation that he purchased the gems from Odisha and was about to sale it to a trader in Bistupur here.
