An illegal gun factory was unearthed in Kalvaryanan hill ranges near here early today and it led to the seizure of ten single barrel countrymade guns and arrest of 11 persons, a top police official said.

"We have been tracking Subramani, the maker of illegal guns for quite some time and we have arrested him after a raid," Police Superintendent, Villupuram, V Vikraman told PTI.

Four single barrels guns that were being assembled were seized besides many implements, equipment and raw materials used for manufacture of guns.

"The factory was located in a remote, inaccessible location which is about 25 kilometres inside the jungle in the ambit of Pappathimoolai hamlet," he said.

Asked if the arrested had links with any Naxalite group,he said,"I cannot say anything now, we are investigating."

Based on the information provided by the 50-year-old Subramani, ten others who were in possession of similar guns were also arrested.

Investigation revealed that he has been selling guns for Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000 to villagers in the hills.

"Subramani and others claim that the guns were used only for hunting," the district police official said.
