A 24-year old man, an alleged smuggler and trader in illicit arrack was arrested under the Goondas Act and lodged in prison, police said today.

P Elumalai, a resident of Thirukalimedu here, had allegedly smuggled illicit arrack from Puducherry.

He was arrested when he was transporting a consignment of 145 litres of illicit arrack packed in 100 ml sachets by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) sleuths at Koothirambakkam near here.

"The accused had been arrested earlier too on similar charges. He was detained under the Goondas Act based on the District Collector's order. He was lodged in the Vellore Central Jail yesterday," investigating officer, PEW, V Ramesh told PTI.

Arrack or country liquor is legal in Puducherry. It is manufactured by Puducherry Distilleries Limited, a Public Sector Unit run by the government of Puducherry.
