The nowcasting services make use of internet-based inputs gathered from a network of automatic weather stations, automatic rain gauges and doppler weather radars set up across the country, an official release said.

Nowcasting is issued in both text as well as graphical form, it said.

As part of the first phase of modernisation of weather services, the India Meteorological Department has commissioned 675 automatic weather stations, 955 automatic rain gauges, 15 Doppler Weather Radars, monitoring/early warning and data visualisation/information processing and communication technologies.

"Several manual operations of the IMD have been fully automated," the release said, adding, all the manpower engaged in such operations have been provided due orientation, training and skill development opportunities.

The High Performance Computing system at National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting and IMD has provided opportunity to assimilate satellite radiance data into the global/regional forecast systems.
