Cases of female foeticide were reported more in urban areas and among affluent families, SCW chairperson Laad Kumari Jain said, sending a clear signal that the problem was not connected with illiteracy.

"We need to identify the reasons for the desire for boy babies and treating girls as unwanted. Whatever the reasons are, there is definitely a need to urgently review population policies and legislations to limit the declining sex ratio and prevent gender-based discrimination," she said.

Jain was speaking after inaugurating a two-day workshop on gender-based discrimination and declining sex ratio here.

About 75 delegates from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi participated in the workshop.
