India can become a world-class manufacturing destination, but there is an acute deficit of "impactful leaders" in this sector and a vast majority of 73 per cent business leaders were creating a "demotivating work environment", according to global consulting firm Hay Group.

Stating that there was a significant difference in leadership styles and climates across global manufacturing destinations, Hay Group said it has set up a 'Make in India Leadership Cell' to support Modi government's flagship programme that would enhance leadership capabilities in the manufacturing sector.

"Manufacturing hubs like China, Germany and the United States are better at creating high performance and energising work environments, as compared to India and Brazil.

"65 per cent leaders in India are creating a demotivating work environment but this is even more pronounced in the manufacturing sector where it rises to 73 per cent," it said.

Commenting on the findings, Hay Group India Managing Director Nitin Razdan said "a leader's behaviour is the single biggest factor impacting team environment and performance. Our research suggests that there is an acute deficit of impactful leaders in the manufacturing sector across India."

India has the opportunity to become a world class manufacturing destination. Strengthening leadership capabilities will play a key role in realising this ambition. The Make in India Leadership Cell has been established to support this endeavour, he added.

Razdan further said that Make in India campaign is an opportunity for the manufacturing industry to scale new heights. India faces a major roadblock in manufacturing, due to the leadership behaviours in the sector.
