A person who posed as the chairman of National Consumer Rights Commission and other organisations and extorted money from several persons was today arrested by the Cyberabad Police here.
Munagala Venkata Laxmi Nageshwar Rao, a native of west Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh was arrested by sleuths of special operation team from Malkajgiri area here different fake ID cards were seized from his possession.
During investigation, it was found that the accused posed as founder chairman of All India Anti Corruption Commission, B4U channel news incharge, member of Regional State Film and Television Development Chamber and was also carrying the fake ID cards of these organisations.
Besides this, he was using fake ID card of a DSP in CID, luring innocent public and extorting money from them, a release from Cyberabad East Commissionerate said.
Posing as chairman of National Consumer Rights Commission, Nageshwar was recruiting members into the state and district bodies by collecting Rs 1500 as membership fee and Rs 5000 for life time membership.
"He promised the members that once the full fledged state body is formed, they can take up the consumer issues and earn huge money. Believing his version, Nagaraju, who was made in-charge for Telangana, recruited 14 members by collecting Rs 1500 from each person.
"He was planning to extort money from the corporate clients in the name of Consumer Commission and also collected huge amounts from members by luring them to be give president and other designated posts at state level and district level," police said.
"In this way, he was planning to collect an amount of Rs 5 crores every 2 years by appointing the members to the designated posts.
"His initial plan was to take up consumer issues pertaining to big corporate clients and collect huge money by threatening them, once the entire state and district level bodies are set up," they said.
In pursuance of his plans, Nageshwar got one firm registered in Telangana in the name "Telugu Prapancham" and collected huge money from businessmen, stating that he is authorised by the government to change the language used on sign boards of government offices, schools and other organisations to Telugu, the release added.
