Allahabad High Court has sought a reply from the Kaushambi district administration on a petition alleging that an 'impostor' was functioning in the place of the chairperson of one of its nagar panchayats following the death of the original incumbent.

A Division Bench of Justices AP Sahi and VK Birla passed the order on August 4 upon a petition by one Nazeer Ahmed and others and a reply has been sought in this regard from the District Magistrate.

The petitioners have alleged that Hashmi Begum, the Chairperson of Manjhanpur Nagar Panchayat, died during treatment at a Mumbai hospital.

They also claimed that Hashmi's son "has now set up another woman as his mother and is getting the function of nagar panchayat performed through her".

Interestingly, a separate petition has also been filed by the alleged impostor that Nazeer and a local daily published in Kaushambi have been spreading "rumours" against her upon which the court on July 31 directed the District Magistrate to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.

The court has decided to club both petitions and asked the District Magistrate "to file his affidavit along with a report after holding an inquiry into the matter and taking the help of police as well".

The bench has fixed August 27 as the next date of hearing.
