Press Trust of India Coimbatore
Tirupur Exporters' Association today requested Tamil Nadu government to recommend inclusion of Tirupur in the Centre's smart city programme.

In a letter to Chief Minister O Paneerselvam, TEA President A Shaktivel said the central government was now in the process of identifying 100 cities in the Smart City programme and having discussions with the states to finalise the city.

The IT driven programme would help in faster decision making in the business and also lead a quality life, he said.

With a population crossing nine lakh, implementation of IT was increasingly becoming essential for faster business decision making and efficient communication apart from leading a quality life and the Smart City was the only solution for it, Shaktivel said.

He said knitwear exports from Tirupur touched Rs 18,000 crore in 2013-14 and in the first six months of this fiscal it clocked Rs 10,050 crore, a growth rate of 16 per cent in terms of rupee and 13 per cent in terms of Dollars when compared to Rs.8,650 crore in the corresponding period last year.

With the continuance of same trend, exports would touch Rs 21,000 crore this year.

He said better infrastructure will not only enhance exports but also provide additional employment to workers, mainly women from rural areas.
