At least 100 families had been shifted to relief camps in Alappuzha district after waves partly submerged their homes in fishing villages like Purakkad, Punnapra and Ambalappuzha, the sources said.

No casualty or damage to properties and fishing implements were reported.

Some coastal stretches in the district also witnessed the rare occurrence of the sea receding away from the shore.

Local residents said sea receded up to one km from the shoreline, exposing the marshy sea-bed.

Turbulent sea caused strong waves to lash coastal areas in Kollam and Thrissur districts also.

Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash directed district administration to take necessary steps to help affected people.
