India seeks to be a major producer of electronic goods under its 'Vision 2020' plan, a senior official said today.
"Vision 2020 envisaged that India will be a major producer of electronic goods by that year," DG of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Omkar Rai said.
Rai said that India was seen as a outsourcing nation in the past.

"Now, that idea has changed as India has gradually transformed into a producing nation and is consistently moving up the value chain," he said at the Infocom seminar here.
Many start-ups are now being set up in the IT sector, Rai said.
Consumption value of electronic goods in the country was USD 400 million, while internal production was only USD 100 million.
Going by the projections, India would face challenges in manufacturing to meet the demand-supply gap, he said.
"Meeting the gap is a great challenge and has the potential to create additional jobs", he said.
Both IT revenue and exports are rising, he said.
