India and Bangladesh should take note of each other's "sensitivities and vulnerabilities" and demonstrate greater political will to establish mutually cooperative ties, Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali has said.
He said having resolved the Ganga water-sharing issue with India, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has now taken the initiative to break the deadlock on Teesta water sharing, a Bangladesh High Commission release said today quoting the envoy.
Bangladesh and India should take note of each other's sensitivities and vulnerabilities, and demonstrate greater political will to establish mutually cooperative ties, he said.
His comments assume significance given that the two sides have failed to ink the long-pending Teesta waters sharing agreement during Hasina's visit here last month though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed his government's commitment for an "early solution" to the vexed issue.
"The Bangladesh prime minister is pursuing a policy of constructive engagement with India and she believes that dialogue is the best way to resolve differences on all outstanding issues and also to create new opportunities for cooperation in new areas," said Muazzem Ali.
"The spirit of comradeship of 1971 still remains the foundation stone of our ties and we must remain faithful to it," he added.
Muazzem Ali was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on "India, Bangladesh relations" organised by New Delhi-based Civil Services Officers Institute yesterday.
He also said that Dhaka-New Delhi ties have reached this "watershed moment" because of the pragmatic steps taken by the Bangladesh premier and quoted President Pranab Mukherjee as having said that the two countries now enjoy the "best-ever" relations.
