India is poised for a major place in higher education in the coming days as better funding and better realisation of quality education are in the offing in the country now, UGC chairman Prof Virander Singh Chauhan, said here today.

He was delivering the convocation address of the ninth annual convocation of Ravenshaw University here.

Calling upon the students to grab the opportunity as privileged sections of society, the UGC chairman said higher education is in a transitional period now with the invasion of technology in education.

He however, disapproved the idea that successful education is only making the students capable of getting a job the day they step out of the universities.

"Education is the training of mind. You may be taught something in the class, but you learn much more outside the class by interacting with others", Chauhan said adding that education is to learn from others, to be able to appreciate someones view to be better than yours and to have a sense of entitlement.

On the ninth convocation of the University at least 64 students were awarded with PhD degree while 30 students each from PG and UG were awarded with gold medals for their outstanding performances in 2016-17 academic sessions.

Vice-chancellor of the University Dr P C Sarangi presided over the function.
