India prohibits import of foie gras

India has prohibited the import of foie gras, a food product made from geese and duck livers which have been fattened.

"Import policy of the item 'foie gras'...Is revised from 'free' to 'prohibited'," Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.

According to reports, this duck liver delicacy is banned in few countries on the grounds of animal cruelty. California banned its manufacture and sale in 2012.

France is the world's top foie gras maker.
