India and Thailand today ratified a treaty on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, enabling both sides to swap prisoners after they have served a portion of their prison terms.

This treaty provides the opportunity to foreign nationals, who have been convicted and sentenced on a criminal offence, to serve their sentence in their own country and facilitates their social rehabilitation into their own countries.

The bilateral treaty, which was ratified today was signed by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and his Thai counterpart Surapong Tovichakchaikul on Jan 25, 2012.
