An Indian national has been arrested in Bangladesh for his alleged involvement in illegal cross border arms trading.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested Gautam Tripura, a resident of Sabroom in south Tripura, along with two other suspects, including his Bangladeshi host, from Matiranga area of Khagrachhari hill district.

Abu Yusuf Mian, office in-charge of the local police station, said the Indian national was initially charged for intrusion and was sent to jail after primary interrogations while initiatives were underway to investigate into his involvement in illegal arms handling.

"We (BGB) have handed (Indian) Gautam Tripura over to police for subsequent legal actions but we will inform the BSF about his arrest through an official memo shortly," BGB's Palashbari frontier commander Lieutenant Colonel M Nuruzzaman told PTI.

Nuruzzaman said the memo would be sent to BSF as part of routine cooperation between the two paramilitary border forces as "we frequently exchange information about the suspects engaged in cross border criminal activities".
