Indian couple drowns in Mebartsho Lake in Bhutan

An Indian couple died after drowning in the Mebartsho Lake, popularly known as The Burning Lake in Bhutan.

The couple, hailing from Kolkata were backpackers, who had come to visit Bhutan via Phuentsholing with a special permit. They reached Bumthang district Tuesday where the lake is situated and drowned in it yesterday, officials said.

There were no eye-witnesses to the incident, they said.

The body of the wife, 30, was fished out by a group of monks, who had also come to visit Mebartsho few minutes after the incident. Her body was found about 30 metres below the accident spot, Kuensel online reported.
 

The search for her husband's (29) body is still on, officials said, without identifying the victims.

The family members of the deceased were informed by the police on the same day.
