A 23-year-old Indian has been jailed for three months in Dubai for molesting a Zimbabwean student inside the elevator of a building where they live.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the man, identified as G N, of sexually molesting the 21-year-old Zimbabwean woman, a college student, after he pleaded guilty.

Presiding judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi said the accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment, gulfnews.Com reported yesterday.

A technician by profession, G N confessed before the court that he touched his neighbour in an indecent manner on September 25.

The defendant asked the court for a swift and lenient punishment.

The woman testified that the incident happened around 1 am (local time) when she took the elevator in the building where she lives at Dubai International City.

"The defendant walked behind me into the elevator. He looked towards me and waved his hand in a way that he asked me to get closer to him. I was very scared and confused. When the door opened on the second floor, the suspect groped my top as soon as I was about to walk out towards my residence.

"I pushed him away immediately and rushed out... Then I immediately called the police and informed them what happened," the victim claimed to prosecutors.

"Police examined the building's surveillance cameras and it was discovered that the defendant lived in the same building and the same floor," she said.

The accused can appeal against the ruling within 13 days, the report said.
