Indian, Japanese firms biggest contributors to London's growth

Indian and Japanese pharmaceutical companies have helped make life sciences one of the biggest contributors to London's growth during the first quarter of 2014, according to the latest figures.

Takeda, one of the world's top 15 pharmaceutical companies, doubled its presence in London between January and March 2014, creating 200 new jobs, London & Partners, the body officially promoting London said in a statement here.

Thirty new jobs in London's life sciences sector were also created by the Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla, which announced plans last month to invest upto 100 million pounds in the UK, to fund the development of respiratory, cancer and anti-retroviral medicines.
 

With a total of 230 new jobs, life sciences is second in growth only to the ICT industry, which created 580 new jobs during the same period, the statement said.
