An Indian man has been indicted by a court here for swindling a Nigerian man of 1.6 million naira (USD 9,700), according to a media report.

Thakkar Mitulkkma was charged with two counts of criminal breach of trust and cheating by the court yesterday. He pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, Mitulkkma faces eight years in prison with an option to pay a fine.

The prosecutor, Sgt Atteh Effiong, identified the alleged victim as Adigwe Lawrence, owner of an electronics shop, the Nigerian Bulletin reported yesterday.

Effiong said Lawrence gave Mitulkkma 1.6 million naira to supply laptops and some electronics to his shop but the accused spent the money on himself.

He said efforts by Lawrence to recover his money from the accused proved abortive.

The case has been adjourned to March 19.
