An Indian-origin woman is among three South Africans who will receive young leader award from Queen Elizabeth in London in June this year for their community work.

Patrice Madurai Madurai, 22, will join fellow South Africans Nosipho Bele and Emma Dicks, both 25, who will be acknowledged by the Queen.

Madurai, a third year Bachelor of Commerce degree in management studies student at the University of Cape Town, was selected for her project, Cupcake reSolution (sic), which helped raise money to assist more than 600 young people living on the streets or in informal settlements to get identity documents, thereby avoiding a life of anonymity in poverty and a lack of access to government grants.

"It is a big honour and surprise to be awarded by the Queen," Madurai told the Afrikaans daily Burger in her hometown of Cape Town.

"I did not start this project to get any recognition," she said.
