"India is a strong and vital and vibrant democracy, and it's only fitting that they would discuss this kind of issue and all of its possible ramifications, as well as its negatives and pluses and its possible impact on the Indian economy," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

"We're going to continue to promote US businesses both in India and worldwide, but we're also going to allow the Indian political system and process to play itself out," he said in response to a question on the ongoing debate in Parliament on Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector.

The Indian government successfully got a bill on FDI in retail sector passed in Lok Sabha, despite stiff opposition.

The bill has been now tabled in Rajya Sabha for voting.
