About 28 per cent of Indians spend over eight hours per day in front of one screen or another during the week, says a recent Titan Eyeplus survey.

The 'Screen Junkie' survey said a staggering 84 per cent of Indians admit to spending more time in front of a screen -- TV, Mobile, Computer, Laptop, compared to five years ago, B Ramesh Pillai, Senior Corporate Optometrist, Eyecare Division, Titan Company Ltd, told reporters here.

Pillai, here to to conduct an eye care session to create greater awareness on vision correction, said prolonged exposure to these digital screens caused immense eye strain thereby making it imperative to take appropriate measures to maintain a healthy vision.

The objective of the workshop was to create awareness and educate everyone on the importance of proper eye care which involved not only getting the right pair of spectacles with accurate prescription, but also getting one's eyes tested every six months, he said.

Stressing the need for testing the eyes at regular intervals, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, Pillai said compared to one eye care specialist for 20,000 population in the urban areas, the ratio was only one for one lakh population in rural areas.

Titan Eyeplus, with 300 stores in 105 cities across the country, would expand in a phased manner also in semi-urban and rural areas, he said.
