When it comes to spending on vacations, Indians are not deterred by currency fluctuations as 63 per cent feel that if the US dollar surges they will rather trim their shopping expenses than curtailing the travel plans, according to a survey.

"If the dollar got expensive, 63 per cent Indian travellers will cut down on shopping and 38 per cent will look at shifting to a more affordable destination," says Expedia Holiday Activity Report 2015.

The survey was conducted online from April 15 to May 12, 2015, with 520 respondents aged 18 years and above across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, analysing travel behaviour and preferences in the country.

Further, the report revealed that 32 per cent will avoid places of interest that are ticketed.

About 32 per cent will also downgrade hotel star category if the US dollar surges, it added.

But only 25 per cent said they will reduce their vacation days, it said.

However, if the American currency got cheaper, 66 per cent Indian vacationers will spend more on activities and 55 per cent will extend the days of their vacation.

While 31 per cent will try and squeeze in nearby destinations, 14 per cent will upgrade their hotel accommodation, it added.

"Holiday activities are picking up amongst Indian travellers. This is evident from the fact that almost half of them decide the activities and then plan their destination this year.

"The traveller evolution is happening at a faster pace now due to access to information available at review sites, Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) and portals. They have much more clarity and access to information, compared to last five years, which now plays a critical role in travel planning," Expedia Managing Director, Asia, Vikram Malhi said.

The survey found that nothing beats shopping for Indian travellers even while vacationing, as 94 per cent are shopaholics.

On vacation, about 11 per cent Indians shop for things they do not need and 21 per cent are interested in collecting curios.

If the dollar gets cheaper, 29 per cent will spend more on shopping, while 8 per cent will prefer to shop for branded labels, it said.

About 17 per cent Indians get anxious while shopping for relatives or friends on vacations, it pointed out.
