Indira Amma canteens, a unique scheme of Uttarakhand government to provide quality food to people on subsidized rates, will become operational in all districts of the state from November 19, the former prime minister's birth anniversary.

All preparations in this regard have been completed and efforts are underway to ensure that Indira Amma canteens become operational in all districts from November 19, Principal Secretary food and civil supplies Radha Raturi said.

Raturi stated this after visiting one such canteen at the MDDA complex here to inspect the quality of food being served at the facility and its hygiene levels.

Accompanied by Principal Secretary rural development Manisha Panwar, Raturi asked the women self-help group representatives running the canteen to buy vegetables and other food items for the facility from local self-help groups (SHGs) and maintain the standards of hygiene.

"Women self-help groups selected at the district level to run these canteens are being trained in Dehradun. Women SHGs from Tehri, Almora, Pithoragarh and Pauri have so far been trained for the purpose," she said.

On an average 900 people eat per day at Indira Amma canteen in Dehradun where locally produced food items are being given preference.
