West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by a volcano-triggered tsunami in Indonesia.

The tsunami has claimed 281 lives, besides injuring over 1,000 people.

"Deeply saddened by the loss of many lives by the devastating tsunami in Indonesia. My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

"In this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Indonesia," Banerjee tweeted on Sunday.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which slammed into the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 pm (1430 GMT) on Saturday after a volcano known as the "child" of Krakatoa erupted.
