A 15-day-old girl child, who was branded with hot iron roads allegedly by a 'dishari' (witch doctor) to "cure" her, today died at Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

The 'dishari', identified as Sanmati Kolar of Siunaguda village under Umerkote block, was arrested.

The girl was born at a government hospital and taken home by her parents a week back, doctors at the DHH said.

When the baby fell ill at her parents' home in Goramba village, they took her to Kolar, after villagers adviced them that the disease could only be cured by a dishari.

To "cure" the victim, Kolar burnt the abdomen and chest of the baby with red hot iron rods after which her condition deteriorated, doctors said.

The parents then took the baby to Umerkote hospital from where she was referred to the DHH here. She was admitted in Paediatric department of DHH last evening and died this morning, they said.

A case was registered against Kolar and she was arrested today, police said.
