Infant twins left 'home alone' by a mother who went to fetch another daughter from a hostel at Ranchi, have been rescued by the police and sent to a child welfare home by a Nadia district court.
The mother, Anu Adhikari, left the seven-year-old twin girls Jessy and Gracy locked alone at home at Don Boscopara in Ranaghat on May 19 before leaving for Jharkhand to fetch another daughter, a BA student, police sources said today.
Neighbours noticed the twins crying from the window yesterday and informed the police, who broke open the door and rescued them.

They were taken to the Anulia Hospital before being produced in Ranaghat Court by the police today.
The court ordered that the infant twins be sent to the Child Welfare Home at Krishnagar, the district headquarters.
Meanwhile, the mother who returned today claimed that she was delayed because the train she was returning in from Ranchi was late.
She said, "I had told a neighbour to watch over my children."
SDO, Ranaghat Suparna Kumar Roy, said, "Until the court's next order, the twins will have to stay at the Krishnagar Home."
The father of the twins, Kikhil Adhikari, is a worker in a missionary high school in Jharkhand.
