The wild elephant was found writhing in pain and unable to walk at Kuwani along the border of Golaghat and Karbi Anglong district yesterday and on preliminary investigation was found to have suffered bullet injuries in its rear right leg.
Veterinarians from Kaziranga Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre have administered medical treatment to the elephant but its condition was still critical.
Unidentified miscreants were suspected to be behind the attack on the elephant which had reportedly damaged houses and created panic among villagers earlier in the area.
