Local people informed the police and forest officials about the plight of the elephant writhing in pain in the mud pit at the Pancharatna hill under the Goalpara forest range, forest officials said.

A rescue team from Guwahati comprising forest officials and a veterinary doctor gave two injections to the injured elephant, the sources said.

Forest department officials said that the elephant was injured in a fight with another one, though local people claimed that the poachers sawed away its tusks and the tip of its trunk.

Forest minister Rockybul Hussain told reporters in Guwahati, "This is not a case of poaching. This is a case of infighting among animals and we are taking all follow up action. We have sent a veterinary team to the area to take care of the animal."
