All the 87 inmates from Sada sub-jail near Vasco town would be shifted to Central Jail at Colvale by January 20 in view of the massive repairs undertaken at the facility, a senior official said today.

"The Jail authorities today shifted 49 inmates to Colvale Central jail under heavy security, while remaining 38 prisoners will be moved out by January 20," Additional Inspector General of Prisons Siddhivinayak Naik told PTI today.

He said the building needs to be handed over to the Public Works Department for extensive maintenance work. The recent inspection by Prison authorities revealed that the condition at sub-jail's ground floor was unfit to house inmates.

The new central jail at Colvale was inaugurated on May 30, 2016 after which all the inmates from erstwhile facility at Aguada were shifted there. The Aguada jail is now being used for tourism promotion.

Sada sub-jail was embroiled in controversy after three instances of inmates attempting suicide in a gap of two days came to light a couple of months ago.
