"To test the veracity of the truth or otherwise made in the affidavit and the counter, principal judge of the city civil court is directed to enquire into the matter within two weeks from today," the First Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice Aruna Jagadeesan said.

The bench was passing further interim orders on a petition from one D J Venkatesan of Puzhal, who sought to restrain prison authorities from letting out sewage outside its premises.

The petitioner also prayed for a direction to government authorities to ensure installation of a proper and full fledged sewerage system in the prison.

Venkatesan said the prison housed 3,000 remand prisoners, convicts and woman convicts and there was no proper system in place to handle human excreta and other waste material, which were let out into the open outside the prison compound.

He said Puzhal area also had a lake, which is the city's main water supply source.

In their counters, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), Chennai Metrowater Supply and Sewage Board (CMWS&SB) and Chennai Corporation submitted necessary steps had been taken to treat the sewage and dispose them off at Kodungaiyur and bleaching powder and chlorine were used to check pollution in local wells.
