The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) today strongly condemned the terror attack on the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris in which 12 people were killed, saying it was a ""grave threat" to the freedom of press.

The INS, which plays a major role in protecting and promoting the freedom of press in India, said the terror strike was a "direct attack" on the right to think, write and speak freely.

"On behalf of the entire print media fraternity in India, the Indian Newspaper Society strongly condemns the horrific shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that has taken lives of 12 people.

"In this hour of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the relatives of the victims of the terrorist attack and the people of France," INS Secretary General V Shankaran said in a statement.

The terror attacks in Paris began with the attack on office of Charlie Hebdo on January 7 and ended with another two sieges two days later.

More than a million people participated in an unprecedented rally against terrorism yesterday in Paris to pay their homage to the deceased in the terror attack.
