: The Madras High Court has directed the Vice-Chancellorand Director of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University to inspect its new premises at Perungudi here and submit a report on prevailing deficiencies while suggesting how they can be removed, within a period of three weeks.
The court gave the direction yesterday after getting an getting an assurance from counsel for law students that there would be no further boycott of classes, as the court is monitoring the issue,
The First bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan directed the college authorities to inspect the area and submit a report in three weeks on the deficiencies and how these would be removed.
The matter relates to a PIL filed by one P Vimalraj, seeking a direction to open the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, School of Excellence in Law, in Perungudi without delay.
On August 8, several law students had gathered outside the college premises and highlighted their demands for basic amenities like drinking water, proper toilets and lack of boys hostel, etc., at the campus.
They had also made a detailed representation to the management, following which it had closed the college indefinitely.
Referring to the absence of a boys hostel in the campus, the bench said, "We would however like to know as to what is the stage of the construction of the boy's hostel and then it is expected to be completed."
On faculty shortage and increase in students' strength,the bench noted that over time the number of students had grown manifold, while faculty strength was as in 2002.
"We are conscious of the fact that is not easy to find suitable faculty, but an effort must be made to get either permanent faculty or persons visiting who can lecture on the subject."
The court also sought details of steps taken to recruit adequate staff and the plan of action for it.
"The alternative arrangement made for teaching in the mean time should also be set out," the bench said and posted the matter for further hearing to September 9.
