An inspector attached to a city police station was placed under suspension for reportedly keeping to himself a major portion of liquor bottles seized a week ago, police said today.

Murali, Inspector of Peelamedu station, was leading a team of personnel to monitor whether all Government run liquor outlets were closed on December six in the area during the seven-day mourning period announced by the state government following the demise of former chief minister Jayalalithaa.

The team noticed that one Suresh had kept 1,400 bottles behind a liquor shop for selling it illegally, police said.

After seizing the bottles, Murali arrested Suresh and showed on record seizure of 192 bottles, keeping the remaining bottles to himself, they said.

Suresh was let on bail the following day, even as Murali did not return the remaining bottles or mentioned in the record, police said.

Based on a complaint, City Police Commissioner A Amalraj ordered an inquiry against Murali. Since there was no proper and satisfactory reply, the inspector was placed under suspension pending inquiry, they said.

In a related development, the commissioner also placed under suspension an Head Constable attached to the Intelligence Section for failing to bring the issue to the notice of higher-ups, police added.
