An inspector was today sentenced to one year imprisonment for allegedly assaulting a farmer during interrogation at a police station in the district on December 20, 2005.
Police said the farmer was taken to the police station for questioning over theft of jewels from the house of his neighbour, a woman, who suspected he had taken it.
He was told to confess to it and assaulted, reportedly by the inspector and other police personnel.

Meanwhile, the woman's jewellery was found in her house behind a door.
The farmer, who was seriously injured, later filed a police complaint.
Police said the investigation found his complaint was genuine and that the inspector, now working in Dharmapuri, was responsible for it.
A chargesheet was then filed against the inspector at the Judicial Magistrate court here.
Magistrate Isakkiappan found the inspector guilty and sentenced him to one year impriosnment.
He also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
