The Punjab government today issued instructions to ensure that the respect and dignity of the national flag is maintained.

Copies of the letter issued in this regard by the Ministry of Home Affairs along with the 'Flag Code of India, 2002' has been sent to division and deputy commissioners, an official spokesman said.

They have been asked to issue instructions to their subordinate officers and employees. Strict action would been taken against officials, individuals and organisations in case the code is violated, he said.

Special caution has to be followed while unfurling and using the national flag with flags of other countries, the spokesman said.

Instructions have been issued to ensure that flags made of paper are used only on important national occasions, and cultural and sports events. These flags should not be discarded or thrown on the ground after the event, he said.
