A Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit gave a go-ahead to the proposal to execute an agreement between INTACH and Department of Archaeology for effective conservation of the monuments.
"We have decided to involve INTACH for conservation and refurbishment of 16 monuments," Dikshit said.
The Delhi government had launched an ambitious project to improve conservation of various important monuments in the city in 2008 and had involved INTACH for the purpose.
Satisfied with performance of the conservation NGO, the government has now decided to task it to refurbish and maintain 16 more monuments, officials said.
The government had signed a memorandum of understanding with INTACH in 2008 to take care of number of monuments for three years.
Based on findings of INTACH survey, the government had removed unauthorised encroachments from a number of monuments. The NGO had carried out out chemical cleaning and preservation of 17 monuments besides improving lighting in and around the monuments.
In view of impressive work by the NGO, the government has now decided to further utilise its services for survey, protection and conservation of 16 other monuments.
The Cabinet also decided to offer 10 per cent rebate on the sale of Khadi clothes in government-run outlets for a period of three months.
The rebate is in addition to the 20 per cent rebate being offered by the Centre since Gandhi Jayanti. Officials said government will have to bear an expense of Rs one crore for extending the 10 per cent rebate.
