Expressing concern over growing drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir, ruling National Conference president Farooq Abdullah today asked the state government to intensify efforts to check the menace.

"The reports of growing drug abuse in the state were of deep concern and worry... The government should intensify its efforts to ensure that the youth are protected from nefarious elements who make money by ruining the lives of our future generation," Abdullah said in a statement on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The former union minister stressed on a robust partnership between the society, civil-society groups and the government to fight the drug menace through a multi-pronged strategy.

"The elders, parents and social support groups have to play the most important role in curbing the drug menace and ensuring the social and economic rehabilitation of those affected by it," he said.

Abdullah said rehabilitation of drug addicts was as important as ensuring checks and balances through legal and systemic regulations.
