Inter-district gang of highway robbers unearthed, two arrested

Those arrested have been identified as Jaswant Singh alias Chitta of village Sarja, and Sarwan Singh of village Dhulka, Phagwara SP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said.

The gang was unearthed yesterday near village Sapror on the national highway.

A stolen car, a foreign-made watch and 22 gram heroin worth Rs 22 lakh in the international market was seized from them.

Giving details of the gang's modus operandi, Khakh said that the group robbed pilgrims bound for religious places, especially Amarnath shrine, Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir and Mata Chintpurni in Himachal Pradesh.

The pilgrims were targeted on highways of Phagwara, Bhogpur, Dasuya and Mukerian.

 

The robbers used to first hit the vehicles of the victims and then rob them of their valuables and cash by threatening them.
