Railways has commissioned the Intergrated Security System (ISS) which provides for multiple screening of passengers at 51 stations across the country, government today said.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, minister of state for railways, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha said the railway ministry has indentified over 202 "sensitive" stations across the country for the implementation of the ISS.
The security system provides for multiple screening and checking of passengers right from the point of entry. The system, comprising the latest machines and software, supplements conventional methods of security which are also being strengthened
Dedicated control rooms at strategic locations provide close circuit TV-based (CCTV) round-the-clock surveillance for the entire station premises.
For personal screening, handheld metal detectors and door frame metal detectors are installed. Baggage screening is done through large size X-ray machines. Bomb detection and disposal systems are available with the latest equipment at important stations.
Chowdhury added that in order to provide security to the passengers during late night hours, the ministry has asked its officals to coordinate with state electricity boards for restoration of power in case of power faliures.
During power failures, emergency load requirement at major stations is met with diesel generators and auxilary transformers fed from electric traction supply, he said.
