Police Tuesday claimed to have busted an international drug cartel being operated from Mumbai with the arrest of a Nigerian who was allegedly found in possession of cocaine and ephedrine worth nearly Rs 18 lakh.

The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the police arrested a 36-year-old Nigerian, John Kennedy, allegedly linked to the cartel, an official said.

Kennedy, who stays at Ulwe in adjoining Navi Mumbai, was caught at Andheri in western suburbs with 125 gm of cocaine worth Rs 12.5 lakh and 5.4 kg ephedrine valued at Rs 5.4 lakh, he said.

He is a member of an international drugs cartel which was operating out of Mumbai, said Shivdeep Lande, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC).

Kennedy was actively involved in supplying ephedrine, a controlled drug substance in India, to South Africa, he said.

"We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act," Lande said.

Meanwhile, in separate cases, two suspected drug peddlers were arrested with heroin and pseudoephedrine by the Ghatkopar unit of the ANC, the official said.

One of them, Manzaar Din Mohd Shaikh (43), was nabbed with 89 gm heroin worth Rs 8.90 lakh from Govandi in eastern suburbs, he said.

The second drug peddler, Yasin Shaikh (36), was held with 2 kg pseudoephedrine worth Rs 3 lakh, he said.
