International passenger detained for gold smuggling

Customs officials today seized gold worth Rs 33 lakh from an international passenger on his arrival at the Dabolim airport in Goa from Jeddah.

A Customs department spokesman said the international passenger, travelling by an Oman Air flight, was found to be carrying 1,240 gms of gold worth Rs 33 lakh.

The seizure was made during the wee hours and the passenger, whose identity was not disclosed, has been detained for attempting to smuggle gold, he said.

He was carrying the precious metal in the "stroller bag metal frame", the spokesman said, adding the passenger had arrived from Jeddah via Muscat.
