Ministry of Finance had sought certain details about services for both freight and goods categories provided by railways during 2010-11 and 2011-12 in the context of levy of service tax, Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa told Lok Sabha in a written reply today.
Service tax on railways have been exempted by the Finance Ministry till September 30 at the request of Railway Minister Mukul Roy.
The details sought by Finance Ministry included total of turnover of Indian Railways, value of freight transported and value of freight exempted from service tax.
He said details have been furnished to Finance Ministry.
It has also sought gross amount charged from passengers travelling in air-conditioned classes, first class and other classes.
Besides railways was aksed to furnish details of value of taxabale services received for providing the core services, amount of service tax paid on these taxable services, value of excisable duty paid on such goods and value of taxable inputs, input services and capital goods received by railways and approximate tax burden on account of central excise duty and service tax.
